On August 11th, weather enthusiasts and meteorologists of the Central Virginia American Meteorological Society gathered once again at the Grapevine to listen to Sandra "Sandy" Lacorte, the Weather Program Office (WPO) coordinator located in Silver Spring, MD.
Dan first provided the meeting minutes and then wowed the audience with a 1980's relic radiosonde that he used in lightning and thunderstorm research at mountaintops. He then displayed a lightning-themed alarm clock that was more a strobe light than a soothing snooze device.
It was then time for Sandy to deliver her presentation, titled "The Life of a National Weather Service Forecaster". Sandy discussed her time as a National Weather Service forecaster at various offices from 2009 to 2020 in the southeastern United States. In addition to weather forecasting, Sandy was also responsible for social media outreach and interviews with local news media. She was also heavily involved in community outreach as a Weather Ready National ambassador, teaching communities about severe weather preparedness and reducing weather related phobias in children. Finally, Sandy also worked on Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS), which involved communicating and working with emergency managers, politicians, the military, and people in positions of authority to better streamline decision making during severe weather between NOAA and the public. Some of her deployments include the PGA Wells Fargo golf tournament and the World Equestrian Games.
Sandy then went into detail about various forecasting procedures and techniques at weather forecast offices during severe weather, tropical storms, and normal periods.
Thank you Sandy for such an interesting presentation!
