On June 20th, weather enthusiasts and meteorologists gathered at the Grapevine for another CVAAMS chapter meeting!
As a reminder, the Mid - Atlantic Chaser Con is on October 26th from 9-5 pm at the Science Museum of Virginia. Early bird tickets are already available and can be purchased on Mid-Atlantic ChaserCon 2019. Demand is high, so make sure to purchase your tickets early!
If you have not already done so, please take out the time to fill out the short survey below which will give us better insight on ways to improve the CVAAMS and get feedback.
Special elections were held, and Mr. Harper graciosuly stepped aside to allow others in the organization to run for election. Mr.______ was elected unanimously!
The CVAAMS will now be implementing chapter dues, which will help to compensate speakers for donating their time and can also improve the CVAAMS. Dues for 2019 are 15 dollars, and starting in 2020, will be 25 dollars each year.
Mr. Effertz, our chapter president, who works for the Department of Enviornmental Quality then gave a very interesting presentation on the "History of Hurricane Forecasting and the Great American Storm Controversy".
Mr. Effertz first discussed some of the meteorological knowledge ancient civilizations had on hurricanes and tropical systems. Mr. Effertz then went into detail about the Great American Storm Controversy between William Redfield and James Espy, who had radically different views on the formation and structure of tropical systems. Next, Mr. Effertz talked about the progression of hurricane forecasting from the 19th to 20th century in terms of accuracy, funding, and detail. Then, the 2nd Great American Storm Controvresy between Kerry Emanuel and William Grey, and their conflicting views on global warming and tropical activity, was discussed. Fianlly, Mr. Effertz brought to light the vastly superior forecasting accuracy in the 21st century and how weather models like the new GFS are saving lives through much improved hurricane track accuracy. Thank you Mr. Effertz for your presentation! Below is the full presentation and pictures from the meeting.
Our next meeting will be August 22nd, 2019 at th Grapevine!
